The Art of Flowers

Nothing makes a room come alive like fresh flowers. I try to have them in our kitchen or dining room often, and they are a must have for an arriving guest. Recently I moved from cutting pictures of neat arrangements from magazines to collecting books on flower arrangements. Last month I was delighted to have about an hour at the LA Public Library looking at every flower arranging book they had on the shelf. My favorites are books by Paula Pryke (her limes and roses arrangement is pictured at right) and a beautifully illustrated book called Backyard Bouquets.

I’ve also developed a habit of seeking out the local florist when I’m in a new town, just to see what kind of flowers they carry. One of the most awesome I’ve found is just around the corner from my office on Miracle Mile called Flowers and Services.

I’d really like to take a class. But until then, I think I’ll use my blog to occasionally share some of my favorite arrangements, alongside my favorite pictures by Jim of flowers in nature, like this beautiful yellow one he snapped at Fairchild Tropical Gardens.

My goal is to begin making beautiful arrangements that are as natural as possible with the most unusual stems I can find! So, stay tuned for photos of some my attempts at floral design!

A New Design on an Old Favorite

This month we’ve rediscovered the watermelon! Not only a tasty and low calorie treat, it is easily sculpted to create a unique and edible table decoration. Jim crafted this nifty watermelon stroller for our niece’s baby shower. Some at the party told us they had seen stores offering similar products for as much as $75, but it required only a sharp knife and about 15 minutes.

Other watermelon table décor ideas I’m considering: a votive holder; a bowl to hold a single fruit like a mound of fresh strawberries; a serving bowl for gazpacho or a cucumber and melon salad.

I like Martha Stewart’s rendition, pictured at left. Actually, she has quite a few good ideas at http://www.marthstewartliving.com/ for watermelon drinks, desserts and various other delicious delights.

Finally, I couldn’t resist sharing this example of the fine art of Chinese watermelon sculpture – in a tribute to Melissa’s dad, CycleHard Paul!
